[CASE STUDY: WEB SITE REDESIGN]
Vital Technologies' web site needed a complete overhaul. The original site design by an unknown author
consisted of numerous default.asp pages located in seperate directories, an animated flash movie for the
logo header, and a DHTML drop-down navigation menu. Furthermore, the designer used large,
blocky clip art images, and did not layout the pages using columns. It was not the worst
web site design in the world, but it was lacking style, visual impact, and interactive
functionality for the visitors.
The new site design implements the use of .HTML and .PHP pages instead, incorporating the use of
several Content Management and Presentation Systems (CMS and CPS). These include phpMyNews, a CMS for posting
news articles on the site, SmartFAQ, for maintaining a frequently asked questions database, and a vertical
scrolling content pane for displaying photos, promotional ads, etc. The index.html page uses the original
DHTML navigation menu and header template from the old site, but utilizes an IFRAME for displaying content pages.
Implementation of advanced DHTML, AJAX, and XML technologies include a RSS news feed ticker(s) that
updates automatically and displays the title and date posted
for each syndicated news article pulled from a remote server, and an auto-scrolling headlines panel
that adjusts its position in the left
column as the page is scolled up and down.
